United Way Oversees $1.3 Million Grant from Emergency Food and Shelter Program to Local Nonprofits

United Way of Southern Nevada receives $1.3 million grant from Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) Phase 30 funding to distribute to local nonprofits. Allocated to 12 organizations across the Valley, these funds must be distributed to the community by March 31, 2013.

“United Way is committed to meeting the emergency and immediate needs of the community, helping them to become self-sufficient,” said Cass Palmer, President and CEO of United Way of Southern Nevada. “We encourage community members to dial 2-1-1 to find out how they can receive help with rent, food and utilities.”

A program of the federal government awarded through the Department of Homeland Security, EFSP funds can be used to provide meals or groceries, lodging in a mass shelter or hotel, and one month’s rent, mortgage, or utility payment in a given year and the equipment necessary to feed or shelter people, up to a $300 limit per item.

United Way as Secretariat, works with a local board to strategically distribute the EFSP funding to organizations that meet the emergency service needs of individuals seeking assistance. Organizations receiving benefits from this year’s grant include Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas, Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, Emergency Aid of Boulder City, Goodwill of Southern Nevada, HELP of Southern Nevada, Jewish Federation of Las Vegas, Las Vegas Clark County Urban League, Lutheran Social Services, Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth, The Salvation Army, United Labor Agency of Nevada and Women’s Development Center.

As a result of last year’s EFSP Funding Phase 29, clients received 111,570 meals, 140 clients received help with utilities and 697 clients received help with their rent.
